Affordable and modern train services to boost regional connectivity

The Initiative
On 29 September 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually flagged off three new Amrit Bharat Express trains—linking Muzaffarpur–Charlapalli, Chhapra–Anand Vihar, and Madar (Ajmer)–Darbhanga.

These are part of India’s push to expand comfortable, non‑AC, semi‑fast intercity travel under the Amrit Bharat scheme.
Muzaffarpur–Charlapalli: Spanning Bihar → Telangana, covering ~1889 km.
Chhapra–Anand Vihar: Connecting Bihar to Delhi over 949 km.
Madar–Darbhanga: Linking Rajasthan to Bihar through Uttar Pradesh corridor.
These trains offer modern amenities (bio‑vacuum toilets, on‑board catering, reading lights, passenger info systems) and are built under the “Make in India” ethos.
Objectives & Strategic Angle
Regional Connectivity & Inclusion: Bridging remote regions to major metros.
Affordable Long‑Distance Travel: Non‑AC but faster and better comfort than conventional express trains.
Rail Modernization: Upgrading fleet, rolling stock quality, and passenger amenities.
Political & Symbolic Value: Demonstrates central government’s commitment to rural and interior areas ahead of elections.
Challenges & Critiques
Operational Viability: Ensuring adequate occupancy to justify maintenance and running cost.
Maintenance & Staff Readiness: Ensuring cleanliness, punctuality, breakdowns.
Last‑mile Connectivity: Stations along route must have supporting infrastructure (roads, feeder transport).
Complementarity with Other Transport Modes: Balancing with air, road, and intermodal transport plans.
Implications for Policy
For students: this is an example of infrastructure expansion aligned with social inclusion and regional development. In UPSC essays, one can link it to “Balanced Regional Development” or “Transport & Logistics in India.” The success of such trains depends on sustained funding, operational efficiency, and integration with broader transport policy.
