In 2025, India will host the 18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), attracting more than 300 young astronomers from 64 nations

What is it?
The IOAA is a leading international contest for high-school students in astronomy, astrophysics, and observational sciences.

It evaluates theoretical understanding, data interpretation skills, and hands-on observational capabilities.
Host Location: Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Coordinated by: Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), in partnership with the Union Ministry of Education.
Goals:
Encourage the development of scientific reasoning and problem-solving abilities in astronomy and astrophysics.
Promote global collaboration and cultural sharing among emerging scientists.
Motivate careers in space science and exploration.
Highlight India’s progress in space missions, observatories, and STEM programs.
Characteristics of the 18th IOAA:
Biggest Version So Far – More than 300 students representing 64 countries.
Combination of Theory and Practice – Written tests, data examination, and nighttime sky observations.
Showcasing India’s Heritage – From Aryabhatta’s concepts to contemporary initiatives such as Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya-L1.
STEM Empowerment – Highlighting projects such as Atal Tinkering Labs and One Nation One Subscription.
Global Scientific Collaborations – Joint efforts in large-scale initiatives such as the Square Kilometre Array and LIGO-India
