Regarding the Hong Kong Convention (HKC):
What is it?

The HKC is an international agreement established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to manage the safe and eco-friendly recycling of decommissioned vessels.
Aim:
Reduce health risks for workers and environmental contamination from ship dismantling.
Control dangerous substances such as asbestos, toxic metals, and hydrocarbons.
Encourage secure waste management and disposal throughout the ship deconstruction process.
Essential Attributes:
Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) mandated for vessels.
Ship Recycling Plans (SRP) require approval prior to dismantling.
Recycling facilities are required to provide Recycling Completion Certificates within 14 days.
Accreditation and evaluations by established classification organizations.
Promotes the creation of licensed and controlled recycling facilities.
