Researchers have discovered novel insights regarding proton adsorption on catalyst surfaces, which may lead to the development of more efficient electrocatalysts for the production of green hydrogen

Hydrogen is a chemical element represented by the symbol H and has an atomic number of 1. It is the lightest element and the most prevalent chemical substance in the universe, making up approximately 75% of all ordinary matter.
This gas is colorless, odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, and highly flammable. Green Hydrogen refers to hydrogen produced through electrolysis, which involves splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity sourced from renewable energy, such as solar or wind.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) defines Green Hydrogen as having a well-to-gate emission of no more than 2 kg CO2 equivalent per kg of H2, which includes processes like water treatment, electrolysis, gas purification, drying, and hydrogen compression.
Gujarat’s Kandla port is notable for being the first in India to operate a Green Hydrogen plant utilizing indigenous electrolysers. However, there are challenges to consider, including the risks associated with transportation due to the highly flammable nature of gaseous hydrogen, high production costs driven by the levelized cost of electricity and electrolyzer expenses, a significant gap between the production costs of green hydrogen ($5.30-$6.70 per kg) compared to traditional grey/blue hydrogen ($1.9-$2.4 per kg), and the technological readiness that affects financing and scaling of production.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023 with a budget of Rs. 19,744 crores, aims to position India as a global hub for the production, utilization, and export of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives, with the MNRE overseeing the mission's coordination and implementation. Additionally, the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition Programme (SIGHT) includes two distinct financial incentive mechanisms.
