Critical component for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and defence technologies amid global supply concerns

Rare-earth permanent magnets are becoming increasingly significant for modern high-technology industries as countries focus on clean energy transition and advanced manufacturing. These magnets play a vital role in several emerging technologies and strategic sectors.
Rare-earth magnets are widely used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, robotics, electronics, and advanced defence systems. Their unique magnetic properties make them essential for improving energy efficiency and performance in high-tech equipment.

Global supply chains for rare-earth minerals and magnets are currently dominated by a few countries, creating concerns about supply security for many nations. This has prompted governments around the world to explore strategies for diversifying supply and strengthening domestic production capabilities.
For India, rare-earth magnets are considered a strategic resource for supporting the expansion of renewable energy, electric mobility, and advanced manufacturing. Experts believe that developing domestic capabilities in rare-earth processing and magnet production will be crucial for strengthening India’s technological self-reliance and long-term industrial growth.
