CISF expands security mandate at airports following heightened threat levels

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has expanded its security responsibilities to supervise cargo operations and the in-line hold baggage screening system at 69 civil airports across India.

This measure follows a directive from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) issued on May 9 in response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and the resulting heightened security concerns.

The new arrangements will remain in effect until May 18, 2025.

Previously, the CISF’s role was limited to screening passengers and their cabin baggage, while private security staff managed cargo and in-line hold baggage screening.

With the new directive, the CISF will oversee these operations directly.

A spokesperson for the CISF explained, “The enhancement of CISF's mandate is essential to reinforce security arrangements at all civil airports.”

In addition, the CISF will supervise the security personnel of airport operators responsible for the screening system.

CISF officers are also authorized to conduct random checks and monitor access control at key facilities, including airports.

The new security measures have already been implemented at all affected airports.

Prior to this, CISF's responsibilities did not include direct oversight of cargo operations and baggage screening.

The decision to broaden their mandate is aimed at providing an additional layer of security to strengthen aviation safety in the country.
