Clash at JNU Leaves Students Injured as ABVP and Left-backed Groups Fight Over Poll Committee Selection

Delhi: A violent clash erupted at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) between members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Left-backed groups, resulting in injuries and sparking police complaints. The altercation, triggered by disagreements over the selection of election committee members at the School of Languages, escalated into a chaotic confrontation.

The clash, which left some students injured, prompted authorities to admit them to Safdarjung Hospital for treatment. The incident unfolded amid ongoing school-level general body meetings conducted by the JNU Student Union (JNUSU) to finalize the election committee members.

Disturbing videos circulated on social media depict scenes of violence, with individuals seen thrashing students and hurling objects, including bicycles, amidst chaotic scenes. Despite efforts by university security personnel to intervene, the situation spiraled out of control.

Both factions, ABVP and Left-backed groups, have levied accusations against each other, filing police complaints regarding the altercation. Delhi Police confirmed receiving complaints from both sides and stated that they are investigating the matter, noting three reported injuries.

The All India Students' Association (AISA) accused ABVP members of resorting to physical violence to disrupt the selection process, targeting Muslim students and creating a hostile environment during the proceedings. Conversely, ABVP JNU President Umesh Chandra Ajmeera alleged that Left-leaning students attempted to manipulate the election process, leading to prolonged disruptions and confrontations.

Amidst conflicting narratives, the incident underscores broader concerns over rising tensions within JNU's student body, known for its politically charged environment and activism on socio-political issues. As investigations continue, the university administration's response and the exact number of injured students remain uncertain, highlighting the need for swift resolution and dialogue to address underlying grievances.
