Renowned Ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas, known for his velvety voice, has sadly passed away at the age of 72 after a long illness. The news was confirmed by his daughter Nayyab on social media, stating that the Padma Shri awardee breathed his last on February 26, 2024.
His representative also shared that Udhas had been unwell for some time and passed away at Mumbai's Breach Candy hospital.
Born into a family with a rich musical heritage in Gujarat, Udhas was the youngest of three brothers, all of whom pursued careers in singing. Initially interested in learning the tabla, Udhas eventually found his passion in Ghazals.

He is remembered for his unforgettable Ghazals such as "Chitthi Aayi Hai" from the film Naam, "Na Kajre Ki Dhar" from Mohra, and "Chandi Jaisa Rang", among others. His first major breakthrough came with a song in the film Kamna, but it was Ghazals that truly defined his career. He even learned Urdu to refine his skills and has left an indelible mark on music lovers in India and beyond with his work in films and albums. His first Ghazal album, Aahat, was released in 1980, and he has since gifted music lovers with over 50 albums and numerous compilation albums.
Udhas also made appearances in films such as Yeh Dillagi, Saajan, and Phir Teri Kahaani Yaad Aayee. His passing has been mourned by fans on social media, with many acknowledging the end of an era in Ghazal music. He is survived by his wife Farida Ushas and daughters Nayaab and Reva.
