The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has marked a significant milestone in space technology with the successful de-docking of its Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) satellites, advancing India's future space exploration efforts.
It announced the completion of the complex experiment on March 13, highlighting India’s increasing expertise in spacecraft docking and separation.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh congratulated the ISRO team, and hailed the mission’s success as "heartening for every Indian."
Crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s unwavering support for boosting the morale of the country’s scientific community, Singh hoped that this achievement would pave the way for ambitious future projects, including the Bharatiya Antariksha Station, Chandrayaan-4, and Gaganyaan.
The de-docking process of the satellites — launched on December 30, 2024 — entailed a series of carefully coordinated maneuvers, eventually leading to the separation of the SDX-01 (Chaser) and SDX-02 (Target) satellites.
The docking of the SpaDeX satellites, completed on January 16, 2025, established India as the fourth nation globally alongwith China, Russia, and the United States to demonstrate space docking technology.
The ISRO stated that the mission is a cost-effective technology to demonstrate India’s ability to make spacecraft meet, dock, and separate in space.
These skills are crucial for future missions like repairing satellites, running space stations, and exploring other planets. Successfully docking in space will also be important for upcoming projects, including human spaceflight and bringing back samples from the Moon.
The SpaDeX satellites were built by the UR Rao Satellite Center (URSC) with help from other ISRO centers, further strengthening India’s role in space technology.
