The Philippines has removed restrictions on Basmati rice imports from India, aiming to strengthen bilateral trade, enhance food security, and boost agricultural exports, including rice, fruits, vegetables, and other key Indian products.

In a significant move to enhance bilateral trade and food security, the Philippines has lifted restrictions on Basmati rice imports from India. This decision is expected to boost India's high-quality rice exports and provide higher incomes for Indian farmers.
A high-level delegation from the Philippines, led by Secretary of Agriculture Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr., visited India earlier this month.

During discussions with officials from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and the Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF), the delegation agreed to increase imports of key Indian food products, including rice, buffalo meat, vegetables, fruits, and peanuts. The lifting of Basmati rice import restrictions was a part of this agreement.
This development marks a key step in strengthening Indo-Philippine relations, reflecting both nations' intent to collaborate in agriculture, trade, and economic growth. With global supply chains facing uncertainty due to geopolitical shifts, such partnerships are becoming increasingly vital.
The Philippines aims to reduce its dependence on Chinese products, enhance food security, and foster stronger economic ties with India. The agreement is expected to contribute to improved food security, economic expansion, and diversified trade between the two nations.
In 2024, India exported agricultural products worth $413 million to the Philippines, accounting for a mere 2% of the Philippines' total agricultural imports.
The lifting of Basmati rice import restrictions is anticipated to significantly increase this figure.
As part of efforts to enhance bilateral trade, a delegation of Philippine food importers is scheduled to participate in 'World Food India' from Sep 25-28, India's largest food trade fair. Additionally, they will attend the International Rice Conference on Oct 30-31.
This move underscores the growing importance of agricultural trade in strengthening international relations and ensuring food security in the region.
