Google has announced a series of new partnerships and AI-powered initiatives to expand responsible, teacher-centric learning across India, aiming to enhance student outcomes and modernize education nationwide.

The company highlighted a nearly ₹85 crore ($10M) Google.org grant to Wadhwani AI to support 75 million students, an MOU with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship to launch India’s first AI-enabled state university at Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, and the rollout of JEE Main practice tests in Gemini, using content from PhysicsWallah and Careers360.

New AI tools in Search and Google Classroom will also support personalized study guides, interactive quizzes, and educator workflow automation.

Early findings from a randomized control study by Google DeepMind with City Montessori School, Lucknow, and Fab AI revealed that most students used Guided Learning in Gemini to develop deeper conceptual understanding rather than simply seeking quick answers.

Encouraged by this, Google is focusing on AI integration that complements teachers and enhances learning outcomes.

Preeti Lobana, VP and Country Manager, Google India, said, “We are energized by the opportunity to scale this impact. By combining the human connection of teaching with research-backed AI principles in learning, we are helping build a future where every learner in India, regardless of their language or location, has the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

“India is home to power users that are embracing multimodal, multilingual, and deep learning, and we are seeing that usage right here with products like Gemini. We are excited by the opportunity to improve learning outcomes by scaling personalized, active learning through deep collaboration with the education ecosystem, ensuring AI acts as a responsible, teacher-centric equalizer,” said Chris Phillips, VP of Education at Google.

Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State, MSDE and MoE, said, “To realize the vision of a Viksit Bharat, we must empower our entire educational ecosystem with digital tools and AI—from students in the classroom to the educators leading them. This collaboration with Google Cloud and Chaudhary Charan Singh University is a step toward bridging the digital divide.”

“By establishing this AI-enabled university pilot, we are aiming to create a framework that will allow thousands of institutions to independently elevate their standards. When we equip our teachers with world-class AI tools and our colleges with smarter operational frameworks, we help prepare students, regardless of geography, to lead in the AI era,” he added.

Chaudhary continued, “Ultimately, we are working to modernize education so that a student’s success is defined by their talent and drive, ensuring they graduate with the high-demand skills to thrive in the workforce.”

Institutional partnerships include:

  • AI-enabled university pilot: Google and MSDE are collaborating with Chaudhary Charan Singh University to establish India’s first AI-powered state university, providing advanced AI tools and mentorship to students outside major metros. Insights from this pilot will guide national higher education modernization.
  • Government-to-Citizen education platforms: Google.org’s grant to Wadhwani AI will modernize platforms like SWAYAM and POSHAN Tracker, offering AI-driven oral reading support in 10 Indian languages and English language coaching for employability. By December 2027, the initiative expects to reach 75 million students.

New AI tools for learners and educators include:

  • JEE Main practice tests in Gemini and AI Mode in Search, using vetted content from PhysicsWallah and Careers360. Students receive instant feedback on strengths and weaknesses.
  • AI Mode in Search features interactive study guides, quizzes, and a Canvas side panel to help students organize and refine learning materials.
  • Google Classroom updates allow educators to give native audio and video feedback, gain AI-driven insights, and automate workflows with Workspace Studio.
  • SynthID watermarking ensures the authenticity of AI-generated or edited content in educational materials.

Google highlighted that India leads global usage of Gemini for learning, including guided learning, quizzes, flashcards, and study guides. NotebookLM usage has already generated over 3 million outputs in the past month.

Products including Gemini, NotebookLM, AI Mode in Search, and Google Classroom are now available in multiple Indian languages to make AI learning widely accessible.
