Second largest 5G user base globally

India has crossed a major digital milestone, with its 5G subscriber base exceeding 400 million users, making it the second-largest 5G market globally, after China. The announcement was made by Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, highlighting the rapid adoption and expansion of next-generation mobile connectivity across the country.
The growth of 5G in India is expected to accelerate digital transformation across multiple sectors. In education, 5G can enable high-quality remote learning and virtual classrooms, bridging gaps in access. In healthcare, it supports telemedicine, remote diagnostics, and real-time health monitoring, improving reach in rural and underserved areas. The industrial sector is also set to benefit from smart manufacturing, automation, and IoT-based monitoring, increasing efficiency and competitiveness.

The rapid adoption is driven by several factors, including infrastructure investment, affordable data plans, and the rollout of 5G-enabled devices. India’s 5G networks leverage modern technologies such as network slicing, low-latency connectivity, and edge computing, enabling advanced applications in AI, augmented reality, and IoT ecosystems.
India’s growing 5G base also has strategic and economic implications. Enhanced connectivity can boost digital entrepreneurship, fintech adoption, and smart city development, while supporting India’s broader aim of becoming a global hub for digital innovation and technology-driven growth.
Challenges remain, including the need to expand network coverage to rural areas, ensure affordable access for all socio-economic groups, and maintain data security and privacy standards. Addressing these concerns will be crucial to fully harness the transformative potential of 5G technology.
With over 400 million users online, India’s 5G journey reflects its rapid digitalisation and commitment to a technology-driven future, paving the way for innovation, economic growth, and inclusive development across sectors.
