Concurrently, it has initiated the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India (GHCI) to guarantee the credibility and transparency of green hydrogen production

India has signed contracts with Japan and Singapore to supply 412,000 tonnes of green hydrogen derivatives. To ensure the legitimacy and openness of green hydrogen production, it launched the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India (GHCI) at the same time.
The Green Hydrogen Certification Initiative (GHCI) is India's inaugural framework designed to authenticate that hydrogen is generated solely from renewable energy sources, thereby qualifying it as 'green'.

It was introduced by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and is overseen by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), with support from the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
The certification process is conducted by Accredited Carbon Verification (ACV) Agencies and operates on an annual evaluation cycle.
The primary goals include certifying genuinely green hydrogen based on emissions intensity, fostering traceability, transparency, and market credibility, aligning with India's target of producing 5 MMT of green hydrogen by 2030, and integrating with the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme set for 2026.
