Solar and wind drive clean transition

India has recorded its highest-ever annual addition of renewable energy capacity, marking a major milestone in the country’s clean energy transition. The expansion has been led primarily by solar and wind power, reinforcing India’s commitment to reducing dependence on fossil fuels and strengthening energy security.
According to official sources, the surge in capacity addition reflects accelerated project execution, improved policy support and rising private sector participation. Large-scale solar parks, rooftop solar installations and onshore wind projects have been the key contributors. Hybrid renewable projects combining solar and wind, along with battery storage, have also gained momentum, enhancing grid stability and efficiency.

The achievement significantly advances India’s long-term target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based installed capacity by 2030, a goal announced at COP26 in Glasgow. It also aligns with India’s obligations under the Paris Agreement, which emphasise lowering emissions intensity and increasing the share of clean energy in the overall power mix.
Solar energy continues to be the dominant driver of growth, supported by declining module costs, production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes for domestic manufacturing, and expanded transmission infrastructure. Wind energy, particularly in coastal and high-wind states, has also seen renewed growth due to policy clarity and improved auction mechanisms.
Beyond climate commitments, the expansion of renewable energy has important economic and social implications. It contributes to job creation across manufacturing, installation, operations and maintenance, while reducing import dependence on fossil fuels. Increased renewable capacity also supports affordable electricity access and helps stabilise long-term power prices.
The government has emphasised that the clean energy push is being accompanied by investments in grid modernisation, energy storage systems and green hydrogen, ensuring reliability as renewable penetration increases. Measures to promote domestic manufacturing aim to strengthen supply chains and reduce exposure to global disruptions.
Experts note that while the record capacity addition is a significant achievement, challenges remain, including land acquisition, grid integration and financing for storage technologies. However, sustained policy support and technological innovation are expected to address these issues.
Overall, India’s record renewable energy capacity addition underscores its growing leadership in the global clean energy transition and reflects a decisive step towards a more sustainable, low-carbon future.
