India possesses one of the most carbon-intensive logistics sectors worldwide, highlighting the urgent need for a transition to sustainable solutions

India's logistics sector plays a vital role in the nation's economic development, enabling the smooth transportation of goods and services across its extensive landscape. In pursuit of a GDP target of US$ 5.5 trillion by 2027, it is imperative to revamp this sector. It underpins various industries, including manufacturing, agriculture, and e-commerce, yet it grapples with numerous challenges while presenting considerable opportunities.
Issues and Concerns

The logistics sector in India significantly contributes to carbon emissions, responsible for 13.5% of the nation's total greenhouse gas emissions, with road transport accounting for over 88% of this figure. Trucks alone are responsible for 38% of CO₂ emissions. Although aviation and shipping contribute less, their effects remain significant. Additionally, the warehousing sector also plays a considerable role in emissions. As the demand for freight and passenger transport is projected to increase, particularly through inland waterways and coastal shipping by 2030, the challenge will be to reconcile this growth with environmental sustainability.
Suggestions
To address these challenges, India should enhance the role of rail in freight transport and electrify road freight, as demonstrated by the pilot project in the Delhi-Jaipur corridor. Coastal shipping and inland waterways present substantial opportunities for decarbonization through the use of cleaner fuels such as LNG and biofuels. While decarbonizing air transport is more complex, the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels and efficiency enhancements in other sectors can help mitigate emissions. Furthermore, the warehousing sector can lower its carbon footprint by shifting to renewable energy sources.
Conclusion and Way Forward
As India strives to achieve its net-zero emissions goal by 2070, a green transformation of logistics—including transportation, warehousing, and supply chains—is crucial for fostering a resilient and sustainable future. By expanding rail freight, electrifying road transport, utilizing cleaner maritime fuels, and enhancing energy efficiency in warehouses, India can establish a high-performing, environmentally friendly logistics network.
