The Buddhist architectural landscape was improved by King Harshavardhana in the seventh century CE.Under Alexander Cunningham's direction, the temple was restored during the British Colonial Era (19th century).
Overview of Bodh Gaya's history: In the sixth century BCE, Prince Siddhartha became the Buddha after achieving enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.
In the third century BCE, Ashoka built a shrine and a diamond throne (Vajrasana) at the location. Islamic invasions caused the site to decline in the 12th century CE, but it saw a resurgence in the 19th century thanks to in the 19th century through British archaeological efforts.
Important attributes:
The 52-meter-tall pyramidal structure known as Mahabodhi Temple is embellished with intricate carvings. A direct descendant of the original tree where the Buddha meditated is the Bodhi tree.
The exact spot where the Buddha became enlightened is marked by Vajrasana, also known as the Diamond Throne. The location of the Buddha's second week of meditation is Animesh Lochana Chaitya.

UNESCO Recognition: Because of its extraordinary universal significance, it was named a World Heritage Site in 2002, renowned for its superb architecture and historical connections to the Buddha's life.
