The African Union (AU) has backed a worldwide initiative to swap the Mercator projection map for one that accurately represents Africa’s actual dimensions
What is it?
A cylindrical map projection, first presented in 1569.

Created for navigation — enables sailors to maintain a direct path along a consistent compass heading.
Created by: Gerardus Mercator (1512–1594), a Flemish mathematician and mapmaker.
Main Characteristics:
Type: A cylindrical projection that is mathematically created to represent the spherical Earth on a two-dimensional surface.
Navigating in a straight line (Rhumb Lines):
Any straight line that is drawn signifies a line of constant compass direction (loxodrome).
Rendered it perfect for sea navigation during the Age of Exploration.
Structure of the Grid:
Meridians: Parallel, vertical lines that are evenly spaced.
Parallels of Latitude: Flat, straight lines — separation grows as one moves away from the Equator.
Grid intersections create ideal right angles.
Magnitude:
Accurate scale is exclusively along the Equator.
Distortion grows greater with latitude, particularly close to the poles.
Conformity:
Maintains shapes and angles, which benefits navigators.
However, the area (size) is significantly altered.
Concerns & Misrepresentations:
Africa and South America seem significantly smaller than they actually are.
Europe, North America, and Greenland appear noticeably larger.
