Cultural diplomacy strengthens global Indian identity

India’s 77th Republic Day was celebrated with enthusiasm by Indian missions and diaspora communities across the world, highlighting the country’s constitutional values, cultural diversity and growing global presence. Indian embassies and high commissions organised flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programmes and community interactions in several capitals, including Colombo, reinforcing a sense of unity among overseas Indians.
In Colombo, the High Commission of India hosted Republic Day celebrations that brought together members of the Indian diaspora, local dignitaries and officials. The national flag was unfurled, followed by the reading of the President of India’s address, emphasising democratic ideals, inclusive development and India’s international engagement. Similar ceremonies were held in cities across Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas and the Indo-Pacific region.

Cultural performances showcasing classical and folk dances, patriotic songs and regional traditions formed a central part of the celebrations. These events reflected India’s pluralistic identity and civilisational heritage, while also promoting intercultural dialogue in host countries. Exhibitions, film screenings and discussions on India’s constitutional journey further enriched the observances.
The participation of diaspora communities, including students, professionals and business leaders, underlined the role of overseas Indians as key stakeholders in India’s global outreach. The Indian diaspora, numbering over 30 million worldwide, plays an important role in strengthening economic ties, technology partnerships and people-to-people contacts between India and host nations.
From a diplomatic perspective, Republic Day celebrations at overseas missions serve as an instrument of cultural diplomacy and soft power. By highlighting India’s democratic values, development achievements and cultural richness, these events help project a positive national image and deepen mutual understanding with partner countries.
Experts note that such engagements contribute to India’s broader foreign policy objectives, including strengthening ties with the Global South, enhancing cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and leveraging diaspora networks for development and diplomacy. Overall, the widespread celebration of Republic Day by Indian missions abroad underscores India’s confidence as a democratic republic and its commitment to fostering a shared global Indian identity rooted in constitutional values and cultural pluralism
