Intelligence agencies heighten alert in central India ahead of national celebrations

Security and intelligence agencies have reportedly identified Nagpur as a high-risk terror-threat location, ranking just behind Delhi and Mumbai, following inputs indicating credible threats from Pakistan-linked terror outfits. The alert comes ahead of key national events and commemorative occasions, prompting authorities to significantly scale up security arrangements across the city.
According to intelligence assessments, extremist groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) are believed to be targeting symbolic and ideologically significant installations in Nagpur. These reportedly include the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters and the Dr. Hedgewar Memorial, both of which carry national-level symbolic importance.

Officials indicated that the city’s growing strategic and symbolic profile, coupled with its central location and connectivity, has made it a potential target in the evolving terror landscape.
In response, authorities have put in place multi-layered security arrangements, including intensified surveillance, increased deployment of armed personnel, vehicle checks, and monitoring of sensitive locations. Intelligence coordination between central and state agencies has been strengthened, while local police units have been placed on heightened operational readiness.
Public movement around key sites is being closely regulated, and emergency response teams have been positioned to ensure swift action in case of any security incident.
The development underscores a shift in terror-risk assessment, where cities beyond traditional metros are increasingly being viewed as potential targets. Experts note that decentralised threats require proactive intelligence-sharing, urban security planning, and community vigilance.
Authorities have urged citizens to remain alert but calm, cooperate with security forces, and report suspicious activity. Officials emphasised that the measures are preventive in nature, aimed at ensuring public safety and maintaining normalcy during upcoming national events.
