International cycling event to elevate Indian sports on the global map

India marked a historic milestone in its sporting journey with the launch of the inaugural Pune Grand Tour, the country’s first Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI)-rated multi-stage professional cycling race. Classified under the UCI 2.2 category, the five-day event began on 19 January, placing India firmly on the global professional cycling calendar.
The Pune Grand Tour features multiple stages covering varied terrain around Pune and its surrounding regions, designed to test endurance, strategy, and technical skill. The race has attracted professional cyclists and teams from several countries, providing Indian riders with rare exposure to high-level international competition on home soil.

As a UCI-recognised event, the Pune Grand Tour offers valuable UCI ranking points, which contribute towards Olympic qualification and eligibility for major international cycling events. This makes the tour particularly significant for Indian cyclists aspiring to compete at the highest levels of the sport.
Organisers stated that hosting a UCI 2.2 stage race reflects the growing maturity of India’s sports infrastructure and organisational capacity. The event meets strict international standards related to route safety, race management, officiating, and anti-doping compliance. Local authorities have also extended logistical and security support to ensure smooth conduct of the race.
Beyond competitive sport, the Pune Grand Tour is expected to boost sports tourism and promote cycling as a sustainable and healthy mode of transport. The event showcases Pune’s landscape and urban infrastructure while encouraging grassroots interest in professional cycling.
Sports administrators and athletes have welcomed the initiative, calling it a turning point for Indian cycling. They believe regular hosting of UCI-sanctioned events will help bridge the gap between domestic competitions and elite international races.
The Pune Grand Tour represents more than just a race—it signals India’s intent to integrate more deeply with global sporting ecosystems. If sustained and expanded, such events could play a crucial role in nurturing talent, improving rankings, and enhancing India’s presence in international cycling competitions
