New global governance metric shifts focus from growth to responsibility and inclusivity

The Responsible Nations Index (RNI) was formally launched in New Delhi, introducing a new global framework to assess countries beyond conventional economic indicators such as GDP. The index evaluates nations on parameters including ethical governance, inclusive development, social responsibility, and environmental stewardship. In its inaugural ranking, India secured the 16th position among 154 countries, placing it ahead of several economically advanced nations.
The RNI aims to provide a more holistic understanding of national performance by examining how states balance economic progress with responsibility towards citizens, institutions, and the environment. Key pillars of the index include governance ethics, social inclusion, sustainability, public accountability, and long-term policy orientation. The creators of the index argued that economic growth alone does not adequately reflect a nation’s contribution to global stability and human well-being.

India’s ranking at 16th has been highlighted as a significant outcome, particularly given the country’s developmental challenges and large population. Analysts noted that India performed relatively well on indicators related to democratic institutions, social inclusion initiatives, and commitment to sustainable development goals. The ranking places India ahead of several high-income countries, suggesting that responsible governance is not solely correlated with wealth.
Officials and experts described the index as timely, especially in an era marked by climate change, inequality, and governance deficits across the world. By emphasising responsibility and ethics, the RNI seeks to encourage governments to adopt policies that are people-centric, transparent, and environmentally conscious.
From a policy perspective, the index offers governments a diagnostic tool to identify governance gaps and reform priorities. For India, the ranking is seen as reinforcing its narrative of being a responsible global actor, particularly in forums addressing climate action, inclusive growth, and Global South cooperation.
The launch of the Responsible Nations Index represents a broader shift in global discourse—from measuring how fast economies grow to assessing how responsibly nations govern. As such indices gain traction, they are likely to influence international comparisons, investment perceptions, and diplomatic engagement in the years ahead.
