Off-duty Air India Express pilot held after passenger assault sparks outrage and official probe

An off-duty Air India Express pilot has been arrested in connection with the alleged assault of a passenger at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport Terminal 1, bringing a key development in a case that had triggered widespread public outrage and scrutiny of airline conduct.
The incident occurred several weeks ago when a passenger was allegedly assaulted during an altercation at the airport terminal. A video of the incident surfaced on social media, rapidly going viral and prompting strong public reactions over passenger safety and professional accountability within the aviation sector.

Following the circulation of the footage, the Union Civil Aviation Ministry ordered a detailed investigation, while Delhi Police registered a case and began examining CCTV footage, eyewitness statements, and the sequence of events leading up to the altercation.
After completing preliminary inquiries, Delhi Police arrested the accused pilot, who was reportedly off duty at the time of the incident. Authorities stated that the arrest was made after sufficient evidence was gathered to substantiate the charges. Further legal proceedings will determine culpability and potential penalties under applicable criminal laws.
Air India Express has acknowledged the incident and stated that it is cooperating fully with law enforcement agencies. The airline is also expected to initiate internal disciplinary proceedings, in line with aviation safety and conduct norms.
The incident has renewed focus on passenger safety, airport security protocols, and behavioural standards for aviation personnel, even when off duty. Experts note that airports are high-stress environments, making strict enforcement of conduct rules essential to prevent escalation.
The delay between the incident and arrest has also raised questions about accountability mechanisms and response timelines in high-profile cases involving airline staff.
As India’s aviation sector expands rapidly, the case highlights the need for clear codes of conduct, swift grievance redressal, and robust enforcement to maintain public trust. Authorities emphasised that no individual is above the law and that due process will continue.
