Electoral roll update draws massive participation

The claims and objections phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu is scheduled to conclude on 18 January 2026. The revision exercise has seen massive participation, with over 1.28 million voters submitting Forms 6 and 6A to either register as new voters or update their existing details.
The SIR is part of the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) ongoing efforts to ensure accuracy and inclusiveness in the electoral rolls. The process involves careful verification of entries, deletion of duplicates or outdated records, and incorporation of new registrations. In Tamil Nadu, a large number of deletions were made in the draft rolls, prompting significant voter engagement during the claims period.

Forms 6 and 6A serve specific purposes: Form 6 is used for new voter registration, while Form 6A allows existing voters to update their personal details, such as name, address, or constituency. By submitting these forms, citizens help ensure that the electoral roll remains current, accurate, and representative.
The SIR process is crucial for strengthening the democratic process, as it guarantees that all eligible citizens have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote, while preventing irregularities like duplicate or invalid entries. Public awareness campaigns, digital facilitation, and verification drives have contributed to the high level of participation in Tamil Nadu.
With the closing of the claims period, the ECI will move forward with verification and finalisation of the electoral rolls, ahead of upcoming elections. The exercise demonstrates the importance of voter engagement, electoral integrity, and transparency, ensuring that every eligible citizen can participate fully in India’s democratic process.
