Mamata Banerjee writes to the CEC, alleging coercion and misreporting during Special Intensive Revision

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, requesting that the Election Commission immediately halt the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state. The SIR, conducted annually, is meant to update voter lists, rectify errors, and ensure inclusion of eligible electors. However, the Chief Minister has alleged large-scale irregularities involving Booth Level Officers (BLOs).

According to Banerjee, several BLOs are reportedly working under “extreme pressure” and are being coerced into submitting incomplete, incorrect, or manipulated entries. She claims such forced inaccuracies could lead to the exclusion of genuine voters from the electoral rolls, thereby posing a risk of mass disenfranchisement, especially of marginalised groups.

The state government argues that BLOs—who are usually schoolteachers, government employees, and panchayat staff—are overburdened and, in some cases, allegedly influenced by local partisan actors. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) fears that such flawed updates could distort the electoral roll ahead of major elections. Opposition parties, however, have countered that these allegations attempt to politicise routine EC procedures.
The matter carries important political and constitutional implications:
As the Election Commission reviews the allegations, the incident brings renewed focus on the need for transparent, technology-backed, and de-politicised mechanisms for voter roll revision to ensure free and fair elections in West Bengal.
