India positions itself at the centre of global AI governance

The Global AI Conclave 2025 commenced in Chennai, hosted by IIT Madras in collaboration with the India AI Mission. The conclave brings together policymakers, technologists, academics, industry leaders, and international organisations to deliberate on frameworks for safe, trusted, and inclusive Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The event serves as a precursor to the India–AI Impact Summit 2026 and focuses on translating high-level AI principles—such as transparency, accountability, and fairness—into practical governance tools and policy mechanisms.

With rapid advancements in AI systems, governments worldwide are grappling with challenges related to ethical use, data privacy, algorithmic bias, and accountability. While several countries and blocs (such as the EU) have proposed AI regulations, there is growing recognition of the need for globally coordinated yet inclusive governance frameworks, especially reflecting the concerns of the Global South.
India, with its large digital public infrastructure and expanding AI ecosystem, is increasingly positioning itself as a bridge between innovation and regulation.
The Global AI Conclave 2025 marks a significant step in India’s efforts to shape the future of AI governance. By focusing on actionable frameworks for safe and inclusive AI, India is positioning itself as a key global stakeholder in ensuring that technological progress remains ethical, equitable, and aligned with public interest.
