ISRO recently carried out an undocking operation, nearly two months after successfully docking two satellites in space

After China, Russia, and the United States, India is now the fourth country to demonstrate the ability to dock and undock in space.
On December 30, 2024, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launched the experimental Spadex mission to demonstrate this capability.

Comprehending Space Docking
The process of aligning two fast-moving spacecraft in the same orbit, gradually reducing their separation, and physically joining them is known as "space docking."
Accurate navigation, automated control systems, and real-time adjustments are necessary for this complex operation.
What Makes This Important?
Enabling Big Space Missions: Heavy spacecraft cannot be launched in a single attempt due to weight constraints. Docking allows modular spacecraft, like the International Space Station (ISS), to be assembled in orbit.
Important for Upcoming Human Space Travel: It is essential for carrying supplies and personnel to India's planned space station by 2035. Crucial to India's Lunar Crewed Projects: This technology is essential for the Gaganyaan program's future lunar missions, which are scheduled to be completed by 2040. Supports Lunar Sample Retrieval Missions Docking technology will be essential to the Chandrayaan-4 mission, which will return samples of rock and soil from the moon.
Improving Robotics and In-Space Servicing: This capability enables the refuelling, upgrading, and repair of satellites in orbit.
