Earth observation and advanced technology demonstration payloads mark major milestone

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the PSLV-C62 mission on 12 January 2026, significantly strengthening India’s space-based observation and technology demonstration capabilities. The mission placed the EOS-N1 (Anvesha) Earth Observation satellite along with 18 co-passenger satellites into their intended orbits, highlighting the versatility and reliability of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
EOS-N1 (Anvesha) is designed to enhance India’s Earth observation capacity, providing high-quality data for applications such as land use monitoring, agriculture, urban planning, disaster management, and environmental assessment. The satellite will support improved tracking of natural disasters such as floods, cyclones, forest fires, and landslides, enabling faster response and better mitigation planning.

A key highlight of the PSLV-C62 mission was the inclusion of advanced technology demonstration payloads among the co-passenger satellites. These included experiments related to in-orbit refuelling, a critical capability for extending satellite lifespans and enabling future deep-space and long-duration missions. Another notable payload focused on artificial intelligence (AI)-based image processing, aimed at enabling satellites to analyse data onboard and transmit only relevant information to Earth, thereby improving efficiency and reducing data transmission loads.
The mission also underscored India’s growing role in global space collaboration, as several international satellites were carried onboard. This reinforces India’s position as a trusted and cost-effective launch service provider for small and medium satellite missions worldwide.
From a strategic perspective, PSLV-C62 enhances India’s space surveillance and situational awareness, contributing to both civilian and national security objectives. Earth observation data plays a crucial role in infrastructure development, climate studies, and resource management, while technology demonstrations prepare the groundwork for next-generation space missions.
ISRO officials stated that the successful deployment of multiple payloads with diverse objectives reflects the maturity of India’s space ecosystem and its ability to integrate scientific research with practical applications.
Overall, the PSLV-C62 mission represents a significant step forward in India’s space journey—combining Earth observation, emerging space technologies, and international cooperation. It strengthens India’s reputation as a spacefaring nation capable of supporting both national development goals and global scientific advancement.
