Nobel Prize-winning economist Michael Kremer published a study on personalized adaptive learning (PAL) software, carried out in Andhra Pradesh

Individualized flexible education (IFE) –
PAL provides a flexible, technology-driven approach to close educational gaps in classrooms.

From assessment to tailored implementation, PAL provides government schools with resources to enhance educational results, effectively and on a large scale.
The educational material dynamically modifies in real time according to a student's performance.
Main characteristics

Tailored educational trajectories according to personal requirements,
Immediate response and
Comprehensive monitoring of progress and insights based on data for teachers.
Recent Findings - The research utilizing the PAL software indicates that schools implementing PAL experienced doubled learning rates among students compared to those that did not use it.
In India, the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2024 revealed that merely 44.8% of Class 5 pupils in government schools were able to read a Class 2 text.
Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) –
The study was carried out by choosing 60 government schools in Andhra Pradesh.
Divided into 30 schools, were provided with computer labs and tablets pre-loaded with PAL software, while another 30 schools did not get the PAL intervention.
Standalone tablet-based math evaluation (distinct from PAL) featuring validated questions that cover Grade 2 through to the student's present grade level.
Observed results -
Enhancement in educational results (an increase of 1.9 equivalent academic years) and
Greater improvements - in lower grades (Grade 6 and 7) and notably among girls compared to boys.
Students in smaller classes had increased access to tablets and utilized PAL more because of improved access (42.3 versus 30.6 hours), demonstrating better progress.
PAL's implementation in India – Its application in India is dispersed and has been utilized in select government schools in Telangana, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.
Benefits: Adaptive learning improves math comprehension; tech-assisted learning produces significant improvements; struggling students benefit from adaptive math; Students can catch up with individualized remediation.
Prospects for the future: The intervention must be gradually expanded and implemented nationwide. To gain teachers' support and guarantee training, both technology and teachers must be utilized to enhance classroom instruction.
According to the most recent UDISE+ data, only 63.5% of schools nationwide have internet access, and only about 65% have computers.
