According to the Union government, the long-delayed Census 2021 will take place in two phases, beginning on October 1, 2026, and ending on March 1, 2027

The census, usually held every decade to refresh the National Population Register (NPR), was planned for 2021 but was delayed because of the Covid pandemic.
The allocation of constituencies for the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies will be conducted using the first Census data following 2026.

This will be India's inaugural digital Census and will be the first since 1931 to collect detailed caste data, extending beyond the general categories of Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) included in every Census after Independence.
Census in India
A census is a population survey of a region that gathers information about a country's demographics, such as age, gender, and job.
History: The initial synchronous decennial census was carried out in 1881 under the leadership of W.C. Plowden, the Census Commissioner of India.
The first census of independent India took place in 1951, and it has occurred in the first year of each decade since then.
The Constitution requires that enumeration be conducted, but the Census of India Act of 1948 does not detail when or how often it should occur.
The population census is carried out by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Importance of the Census
Data-Driven Decision Making: The Census offers comprehensive socio-economic information, enabling the government to make knowledgeable choices regarding matters such as education, healthcare, housing, jobs, and infrastructure.
Assessing Development Progress: Analyzing census data across decades aids in evaluating the success of previous policies, informing future approaches.
Environmental Planning: The Census offers information on population centers and demographic challenges, aiding in environmental sustainability initiatives.
Electoral Reforms and Delimitation: Census information directly influences the division of constituencies, guaranteeing equitable representation in Parliament and State Legislatures.
Path Forward
The impending Census offers a vital chance to close persistent data gaps, particularly regarding caste and socio-economic indicators.
