The theme “Celebrating Men and Boys” highlights gender paradigms and the social discourse around male well-being

International Men’s Day (IMD) is observed every year on 19 November to recognise the contributions, responsibilities, and well-being of men and boys. The 2025 theme—“Celebrating Men and Boys”—emphasises positive masculinity, gender balance, and the need to address issues that men face across societies.
India hosts some of the largest and most vibrant IMD observances in the world. A key figure in its popularisation has been Uma Challa, an Indian woman activist who significantly expanded the movement’s reach through advocacy on gender fairness, parental rights, and awareness campaigns. Her work helped embed IMD within India’s broader gender-discourse ecosystem.

Globally, IMD is recognised across nearly 90 countries and aims to complement (not compete with) International Women’s Day, by promoting balanced discussions on gender justice, well-being, and social responsibility.
Men globally—and in India—report higher rates of completed suicide. Social conditioning often discourages men from seeking emotional or psychological help. IMD 2025 draws attention to:
With economic shifts, urbanisation, and evolving family structures, traditional gender roles are rapidly transforming. Men increasingly navigate caregiving duties, work-life stress, and expectations of being primary earners—creating identity pressures that require open social dialogue.
IMD promotes reflection on the intersection of masculinity and patriarchy—how patriarchal norms harm not only women but also men, by reinforcing rigid gender expectations. The focus is on encouraging:
The theme also highlights men who contribute meaningfully to society—teachers, fathers, caregivers, community workers, and social leaders—reinforcing the idea that positive masculinity supports inclusive growth and gender equity.
IMD 2025 encourages India to broaden its gender discourse beyond women-centric issues to a more holistic lens that includes men’s health, education, emotional well-being, and family rights. It reflects a shift towards gender symmetry, acknowledging that balanced gender policies can strengthen families, communities, and social cohesion.
International Men’s Day 2025, with its theme “Celebrating Men and Boys,” invites societies to re-examine gender paradigms. For India, it serves as an opportunity to foster healthy masculinity, improve mental-health support systems, and ensure that gender justice includes the lived realities of all genders. In doing so, IMD supports a broader vision of inclusive, compassionate, and equitable social development.
