Commemorating Netaji’s Birth Anniversary and Cultural Traditions

India observed Parakram Diwas on 23 January 2026 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, one of the most inspiring leaders of India’s freedom struggle. The day is dedicated to celebrating Netaji’s courage, leadership, and unwavering commitment to India’s independence. Across the country, tributes were paid through official ceremonies, exhibitions, cultural programmes and educational events highlighting his role in mobilising mass resistance against colonial rule.
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is remembered for his revolutionary ideology, his leadership of the Indian National Army (INA) and his iconic call of “Give me blood, and I will give you freedom.” Government institutions and armed forces marked the occasion by recalling his emphasis on discipline, sacrifice and national unity. The observance of Parakram Diwas aims to inspire citizens, especially the youth, to imbibe the values of courage, patriotism and selfless service to the nation.

Coinciding with Parakram Diwas, Basant Panchami (Vasant Panchami) was also celebrated in many parts of India. The festival marks the arrival of spring and is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, learning, music and arts. Educational institutions organised Saraswati Puja, where students sought blessings for wisdom and intellectual growth. The colour yellow, symbolising prosperity and vitality, dominated celebrations through attire, decorations and traditional food.
Basant Panchami holds cultural significance across regions, being associated with agricultural renewal, classical music traditions and the beginning of new learning pursuits. The festival also marks an auspicious time for initiating education, creative arts and spiritual practices.
The simultaneous observance of Parakram Diwas and Basant Panchami reflects the confluence of India’s historical consciousness and cultural heritage. While Parakram Diwas honours the spirit of resistance and national pride embodied by Netaji, Basant Panchami celebrates renewal, knowledge and harmony. Together, they reinforce India’s values of courage, wisdom and collective identity, linking the freedom struggle with enduring civilisational traditions.
