What is it?

Samudra Pradakshina is the first all-women circumnavigation expedition in India involving the tri-services (Army, Navy, Air Force).

It includes navigating the world, traversing all longitudes and significant oceans, adhering to the World Sailing Speed Record Council's standards for genuine circumnavigation.

Historical Background:

Draws upon India’s extensive legacy of circumnavigation:

Capt. Dilip Donde (2009–10) – first Indian to complete a solo circumnavigation.

Cmde. Abhilash Tomy (2012–13) – first Indian to sail non-stop around the world.

INSV Tarini – Navika Sagar Parikrama (2017–18) & Navika Sagar Parikrama-II (2024–25) conducted by Indian Navy teams comprised entirely of women.

Motivated by international trailblazers such as Sir Robin Knox-Johnston (1969).

Goals & Intentions:

Symbol of Nari Shakti: Demonstrate bravery, strength, and leadership of women in uniform.

Enhance Collaboration: Fortify cooperation between Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Diplomatic Engagement: Utilize port visits as venues for military diplomacy and cultural interaction.

Scientific Investigation: Partner with NIO to examine micro-plastics, marine biodiversity, and ocean health.

Main Characteristics:

Vessel: IASV Triveni, a 50-foot locally made yacht (Class A) constructed in Puducherry.

Route: approximately 26,000 nautical miles, eastern course, crossing the Equator two times, rounding Capes Leeuwin, Horn, and Good Hope.

Team: 10 female officers, commanded by Lt Col Anuja Varudkar (Army) and Sqn Ldr Shraddha P Raju (IAF).

Schedule: September 2025 – May 2026.
