Education minister V Sivankutty said the decision follows student complaints about heavy workload, with the curriculum committee approving changes that reduce learning pressure without altering textbook content statewide.

Kerala will reduce the Class 10 syllabus by 25% from the next academic year, Education Minister V Sivankutty said, citing long-standing concerns from students about excessive academic pressure.
The minister announced the decision while interacting with students at Thevalakkara, after handing over the keys to a newly built house for the family of Mithun, a student who died last year after being electrocuted near the premises of Thevalakkara Boys High School.

Sivankutty said the government had taken note of repeated complaints about workload and decided to act.
“In next year’s school textbooks, 25% of the syllabus will be reduced from what exists in the current books. The curriculum committee has already approved the decision,” he said.
He clarified that while the syllabus load would be cut, the content of the textbooks would not be altered.
The house key-handover was jointly carried out by Sivankutty and Kerala Finance Minister K N Balagopal. Mithun had died after accidentally coming into contact with an electric line near the school campus.
