Over 11,000 students receive ₹13 crore in scholarships from VIT programs

More than 11,000 students have received scholarships totaling over ₹13 crore through Vellore Institute of Technology’s (VIT) flagship programs, including STARS and Higher Education for All, the institute’s founder and chancellor G Viswanathan said.

Speaking at the STARS event organized by VIT’s Universal Higher Education Trust (UHET) for the first time in Tiruvannamalai, Viswanathan highlighted regional disparities in higher education.

He noted that while Tamil Nadu’s Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) stands at 47%, above the national average of 28%, enrollment in the northern districts of the state remains low, affecting economic growth.

“The VIT has established Higher Education for All Foundation to bridge the gap in enrollment ratio between northern districts and the rest of the State. Schemes like STARS program have been implemented to uplift rural students in erstwhile North Arcot districts, which are economically and educationally backwards,” he said.

Deputy Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and chief guest K Pitchandi distributed scholarships worth ₹28 lakh to 242 meritorious students during the event.
