Landmark order bars over 30 entities from misusing iconic film’s title, characters, and catchphrases.

In a significant win for intellectual property protection in Indian cinema, the Delhi High Court has granted interim relief to the makers of the cult classic Andaz Apna Apna, restraining over 30 individuals and entities from unauthorized use of the film’s title, characters, dialogues, and artistic elements.
The order, issued by Justice Amit Bansal, comes in response to a lawsuit filed by Vinay Pictures, represented by Shanti Vinaykumar Sinha, legal heir to the film’s late producer, Vinay Sinha. The court issued a John Doe injunction — a sweeping legal measure aimed at unidentified as well as named infringers — to safeguard the film’s intellectual property across multiple platforms.

“The plaintiff has demonstrated a prima facie case for the grant of an interim injunction. In the absence of such protection, the plaintiff is likely to suffer irreparable harm,” Justice Bansal stated in his order. He emphasized that misuse of the film's IP could not only dilute its commercial value but also mislead the public, attributing substandard products or content to the rightful owners.
The protection extends across physical merchandise, digital content, domain names, and even AI-generated recreations of characters or scenes. The court further empowered the plaintiffs to act against mirror and redirect URLs, and to bring additional infringers under the injunction’s ambit as necessary.
Advocate Pravin Anand, representing Vinay Pictures, argued that the film’s iconic elements — including characters like Amar, Prem, Teja, and the unforgettable Crime Master Gogo, as well as catchphrases like “Aila!”, “Ouima!” and “Teja main hoon, mark idhar hai” — have attained widespread recognition and secondary meaning in popular culture.
First released in 1994, Andaz Apna Apna remains one of Bollywood’s most beloved comedies. This court ruling not only affirms its enduring legacy but sets a strong precedent for the protection of creative works in an age of rampant digital replication and unauthorized commercialization.
