Lamborghini Revuelto

Four days after a ₹10 crore Lamborghini Revuelto tore through Kanpur’s VIP Road, injuring six people and damaging multiple vehicles, police on February 12 arrested Shivam Mishra, son of tobacco baron KK Mishra, stating that evidence confirms he was driving at the time of the crash.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Atul Kumar Srivastava said five teams were formed to trace Shivam after receiving specific inputs about his presence in the city. “Investigation has established that he was behind the wheel,” the officer told reporters, adding that police have sought a 14-day remand.

Shivam was taken for a medical examination before being produced in court. Visuals circulating after his arrest showed him limping and leaning on police personnel for support as he was escorted. During the hearing, police informed the court that he had been arrested for non-cooperation in the investigation and for evading authorities in the days following the crash.

The crash on VIP Road

The accident occurred around 3 pm on VIP Road when the speeding Italian supercar allegedly ploughed into pedestrians and vehicles before mounting a divider and coming to a halt. An FIR was registered on the complaint of 18-year-old e-rickshaw driver Mohd Taufeeq, one of the injured.

Initially filed against an unidentified driver, the FIR was later amended to name Shivam as the accused. The luxury vehicle has since been seized for forensic examination.

Twist in the case

The case took a dramatic turn a day before Shivam’s arrest when a man identified as Mohan appeared before court claiming he — not Shivam — was driving the car.

Speaking to reporters, Mohan alleged that Shivam, who was seated beside him, suffered a sudden seizure moments before impact. “He suddenly collapsed on me. I panicked and tried to hold him with one hand. The car first hit a three-wheeler, climbed the divider and then stopped,” Mohan claimed. He further said the car’s automatic locking system delayed his exit and that he shifted Shivam to the driver’s seat before stepping out.

Mohan’s lawyer moved a surrender application, and he formally appeared in court. However, the Gwaltoli police did not name him as an accused in their report. Taking note of the police stand, the court refused to accept his surrender and sought a detailed report from the local police station.

At the time, Shivam was absconding.

Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal dismissed Mohan’s claims, asserting that CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts and other material evidence clearly show Shivam was driving when the Lamborghini rammed into people and vehicles. Senior officers also referred to videos purportedly showing bystanders pulling a man believed to be Shivam from the driver’s seat immediately after the crash.

Settlement claims and SHO’s transfer

The defence has claimed that the complainant no longer wishes to pursue the case. Shivam’s lawyer, Dharmendra Singh, said Taufeeq had reached a mutual settlement and did not intend to initiate legal action. He alleged that Mohan was driving and had paid compensation towards medical expenses and losses.

Sources said Taufeeq was called to the Gwaltoli police station on the day of the crash, where a written settlement was signed in the presence of then Station House Officer Santosh Kumar Gaur. The SHO was subsequently removed from charge and sent to lines. Senior officials declined to comment on the alleged settlement.

Family’s shifting stand

In the immediate aftermath, Shivam’s father told police that a driver was at the wheel. He later revised his statement, saying he did not know who was driving and that the matter required investigation. He also claimed the car had developed a technical snag a day earlier and was taken out for a test drive after repairs.

According to KK Mishra, Shivam began losing consciousness while returning from Civil Lines, prompting the driver to slow down before an autorickshaw allegedly struck the car. Security personnel travelling in an accompanying SUV are said to have broken a window to rescue him.

The family has maintained that Shivam suffers from epilepsy and is undergoing treatment in Delhi, denying allegations of speeding or intoxication.

Police, however, have rejected these claims, reiterating that technical and visual evidence places Shivam Mishra in the driver’s seat at the time of the high-speed crash that left six injured and triggered a citywide uproar.
