In his longest Independence Day address, Modi draws on the legend of Lord Krishna to announce an advanced defense system securing key public spaces against future threats.

From the ramparts of the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15 unveiled an ambitious plan to create a state-of-the-art “Sudarshan Chakra” defense system — a sweeping national security shield to protect India’s critical infrastructure from emerging threats by 2035.
The mission, named after Lord Krishna’s mythical celestial weapon, will deploy cutting-edge precision targeting and advanced weaponry to secure vital public spaces, including railway stations, hospitals, and religious sites, against the evolving landscape of warfare.

“In the next ten years, by 2035, I want to expand, strengthen, and modernize this national security shield. Drawing inspiration from Lord Shri Krishna, we have chosen the path of the Sudarshan Chakra,” Modi declared during his 103-minute speech — the longest Independence Day address of his tenure.
The Prime Minister said the Sudarshan Chakra Mission would integrate a Precise Target System capable of both intercepting attacks and delivering decisive retaliatory responses. Citing the success of Operation Sindoor, in which India thwarted missile and drone strikes from Pakistan using homegrown technology, Modi warned that the “nature of war is changing” and India must keep pace.
“We are committed to building a strong Sudarshan Chakra shield to deal with the changing nature of war,” he said, positioning the initiative as a cornerstone of India’s defense doctrine for the next decade.
Modi’s announcement comes amid a turbulent global security climate, with the plan set to redefine India’s preparedness for conflicts shaped by drones, AI-driven systems, and precision missile technologies.
