Weeks after Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation, the BJP pivots to choose CP Radhakrishnan—an experienced RSS-aligned leader from Tamil Nadu—as the NDA’s candidate for Vice President.

In a striking shift just weeks after the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, the BJP has chosen Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as the National Democratic Alliance’s candidate for Vice President.
Jagdeep Dhankhar, known for his vocal and assertive approach as Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairperson, stepped down in July, reportedly citing health concerns. His fast-paced style and Jat-dominant appeal marked a different BJP era.

In contrast, CP Radhakrishnan is seen as a consensus-driven, inclusive figure rooted deeply in the RSS and Jan Sangh tradition. Described as a "mellow and inclusive" leader, his nomination signals the BJP’s renewed focus on OBC social engineering and gaining ground in South India.
The nomination also carries strong symbolic value. Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran called it a “moment of pride” for Tamils and urged the DMK to reconsider its stance. Despite this, DMK has declined support, highlighting ideological differences with the BJP.
BJP President JP Nadda confirmed the choice, highlighting Radhakrishnan’s long experience and urging consensus across parties for an unopposed election.
Experts argue this is BJP’s strategic move to enhance its political messaging—balancing the fiery image of Dhankhar with a calm, South-focused persona like Radhakrishnan, while appealing to broader regional and social demographics.
If elected on September 9, 2025, Radhakrishnan would become the third Vice President hailing from Tamil Nadu, after Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and R. Venkataraman.
