On Monday, the Ministry of Home Affairs notified the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which grants Indian citizenship to certain religious groups fleeing religious persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. These groups include Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians. The Act does not apply to Muslims.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of bringing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019, to build its vote bank. He said that the BJP plans to provide these individuals with accommodation throughout the city, especially in areas where the BJP has little support, in order to secure votes from them.
Kejriwal also expressed his concern that the BJP is allowing these individuals to enter the country while many citizens are without homes and jobs. The CAA, whose rules were recently announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs, offers a fast-track to Indian citizenship for Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians who migrated to India due to religious persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, but not for Muslims.
