The Union Home Minister said Congress is relying on program management through social media reels instead of genuine public communication.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticized a wave of short videos featuring Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, saying they were examples of “program management” rather than genuine public outreach.
“There is a big difference between managing a program and communicating with the public,” Shah said, arguing that Congress was trying to “create an illusion among the people” after recent electoral setbacks. The remarks were made in an interview to news agency ANI on Aug 25.

Shah’s comments come amid a visible uptick in Gandhi’s social-media presence, with reels from public events being widely shared by party channels and supporters.
When asked about this surge, Shah reiterated that the Bharatiya Janata Party prioritized direct, on-ground engagement over what he termed optics, repeating that managing visuals was not the same as sustained communication with citizens.
The exchange unfolded as Gandhi continued his “Voter Adhikar Yatra” in Bihar, a campaign highlighting alleged irregularities in the state’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Videos from the yatra, many of which circulated as short clips formed the immediate backdrop for Shah’s critique.
News reports have documented the rapid spread of these reels across platforms in recent days, contributing to the broader political conversation around the Opposition’s outreach strategy.
The Home Minister said the party’s frustration after successive defeats was showing, and he framed the BJP’s approach as one grounded in direct contact with voters rather than curated social-media moments.
The Congress has frequently used short-form video to showcase Gandhi’s interactions during outreach drives, an approach that party leaders argue helps them reach younger audiences and bypass what they consider hostile sections of traditional media.
The BJP, for its part, maintains an extensive digital operation of its own, but Shah’s remarks suggest the ruling party wants to draw a distinction between mobilization on the ground and the optics of viral clips.
