Following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam and growing diplomatic strain, India's participation in cross-border cricket events — once again — hangs in the balance.

As the fervor of IPL 2025 grips cricket fans across India, shadows loom large over one of Asia's most anticipated tournaments. The Asia Cup 2025, a crucial fixture in the subcontinent’s cricket calendar, now faces probable cancellation amid escalating India-Pakistan tensions and deepening security concerns.
According to a report, the recent terror attack in Pahalgam has sent ripples through the Indian cricketing establishment. In its aftermath, national security agencies have raised alarms over cross-border engagements — prompting calls to reconsider India’s participation in any cricketing events involving Pakistan.

The Indian government’s hardened stance following the attack has further strained diplomatic ties with Islamabad, threatening not only the Asia Cup but also India’s upcoming tour of Bangladesh, which was slated to include T20Is and ODIs.
This isn’t uncharted territory for Asian cricket. In 2023, the Asia Cup was split between Pakistan and Sri Lanka due to India's refusal to play in Pakistani territory. India played its matches exclusively in Sri Lanka, including the much-hyped clash against Pakistan, and went on to win the title.
Similarly, India opted out of traveling to Pakistan for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, instead playing in Dubai where they clinched victory over New Zealand in the final.
The last time an Indian cricket team set foot in Pakistan was in 2008. Since then, a volatile geopolitical climate and repeated security concerns have made such visits virtually impossible. With little hope for a diplomatic thaw, organizers now face the grim reality that the Asia Cup 2025 could be the latest casualty in a cricket rivalry overshadowed by politics.
As the cricketing world watches closely, the fate of the tournament — and the prospect of rekindling one of the sport’s most electric rivalries — remains deeply uncertain.
