Citing post-terror tensions, Dhawan, Harbhajan and others refuse to play Pakistan; organizers cancel match, issue apology for “hurting sentiments.”

The highly anticipated India vs Pakistan legends match at the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 was abruptly called off after senior Indian players, including Shikhar Dhawan and Harbhajan Singh, boycotted the fixture citing ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Scheduled to take place at Edgbaston on July 20, the opening clash for the India Champions was withdrawn following a strong stand taken by multiple Indian cricketing stalwarts in the wake of the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, which escalated cross-border sensitivities.

Leading the boycott, former India opener Shikhar Dhawan confirmed late July 19 on social media that he would not participate in any matches involving Pakistan in the tournament. Dhawan shared a formal communication that underscored the team’s collective stance:
“In view of the current geopolitical situation and the prevailing tensions between India and Pakistan, Mr. Dhawan and his team have taken this position after due consideration,” read the statement released via his X handle.
The move triggered a domino effect, with veterans Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, and Yusuf Pathan also pulling out of the marquee clash.
In the early hours of July 20, the WCL organizers issued a statement expressing regret and announcing the cancellation of the match.
“We thought of continuing with the India vs Pakistan match at WCL, just to create some happy memories for people around the globe... But in the process, we ended up hurting the feelings of many and stirring emotions,” the statement read.
The organizers further acknowledged the discomfort caused to the Indian legends and brands associated with the event, stating, “We sincerely apologize again for hurting sentiments.”
The India-Pakistan clash, which had drawn massive global attention following last year’s dramatic final — won by India — was meant to kick off the second edition of the six-team legends tournament. However, political undertones overshadowed the sporting spectacle, reigniting debate over bilateral sporting engagements amidst diplomatic unrest.
India will now begin their WCL 2025 campaign against South Africa Champions on July 22 in Northampton. The team includes Yuvraj Singh, Robin Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu, Stuart Binny, Varun Aaron, and Vinay Kumar — a star-studded lineup of retired cricket greats.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Champions, led by Mohammad Hafeez, will face West Indies Champions in their next outing on July 25 in Leicester, having narrowly lost their opener to England Champions.
