Skipper's heroics overshadowed by BCCI sanction following IPL 2025 clash in Chennai.

Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer was slapped with a ₹12 lakh fine by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for maintaining a slow over-rate during their IPL 2025 showdown against Chennai Super Kings, even as his team pulled off a dramatic four-wicket win at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 30.
The BCCI confirmed in a statement that this was Punjab’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate requirements. “Shreyas Iyer, Captain, Punjab Kings has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 49...,” the official release noted.

The sanction came despite Iyer leading from the front with a match-winning knock of 72 off 41 balls, anchoring Punjab Kings' chase of 191. Partnering with opener Prabhsimran Singh (54 off 36), the duo laid the foundation for a successful chase, sealed with two balls to spare.
Earlier, Yuzvendra Chahal turned the tide with a stunning spell of 4 for 32, including a sensational hat-trick, to restrict CSK to 190 all out. Despite a valiant 88 off 47 balls from Sam Curran, CSK struggled to capitalize in the death overs. Dewald Brevis (32 off 26) offered brief support, but Chahal and Marco Jansen (2 wickets) ensured Punjab stayed in the hunt.
While the victory bolstered Punjab’s playoff hopes, the post-match penalty served as a reminder of the league’s crackdown on over-rate violations — an area teams cannot afford to overlook as the tournament intensifies.
