Young cricketer Yashasvi Jaiswal has surpassed Virat Kohli's record for the highest number of runs in a Test series on home soil against England. Jaiswal's impressive performance in the ongoing series has seen him amass over 700 runs, a milestone previously reached only by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar.
Jaiswal's journey to the top of the run-scoring charts has been meteoric since his debut in July of the previous year. His tally includes an impressive five centuries, two of which were double tons.

During the fifth Test against England, Jaiswal's bat spoke volumes as he became the series' top run-scorer, eclipsing Kohli's 655 runs from the 2016/17 series. With this achievement, Jaiswal joins Gavaskar as the only other Indian to score over 700 runs in a single Test series. Gavaskar achieved this feat twice against the West Indies, scoring 774 runs in 1971/72 and 732 runs in 1978-79.
The dynamic opener is also on the cusp of setting a new all-time record, potentially outdoing Gavaskar's tally with another inning still to play in the series.
Jaiswal's latest innings came on the heels of a dominant performance by spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin, who decimated the English batting lineup, taking nine wickets between them. Jaiswal contributed a swift 57 off 58 balls before being dismissed by Shoaib Bashir.
This performance also saw Jaiswal tie for the third-fastest to reach 1000 Test runs as an opener, achieving the milestone in just 16 innings, one inning fewer than Indian captain Rohit Sharma.
As the first day concluded in Dharamsala, Rohit Sharma remained unbeaten at 52, with Shubman Gill providing support at 26*, as India trailed by 83 runs.
