Fireball rocks Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starbase as Starship test ends in massive explosion

A massive explosion ripped through Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starbase in Texas late June 18, abruptly halting preparations for the company’s highly anticipated Starship launch. The blast occurred during a routine static fire test of Starship 36 at Massey’s Outpost, SpaceX’s testing site on the southwest edge of Boca Chica.

Shocking footage circulating online captured a towering fireball engulfing the test stand, lighting up the night sky and sparking immediate emergency protocols.

"On Wednesday, June 18 at approximately 11 p.m. CT, the Starship preparing for the tenth flight test experienced a major anomaly while on a test stand at Starbase," SpaceX confirmed in a post on X. The company stressed that no injuries were reported and all personnel were safe.

As fire crews worked to secure the site, SpaceX urged the public to stay clear of the area while safety teams collaborated with local officials to stabilize the situation. "There are no hazards to residents in surrounding communities, and we ask that individuals do not attempt to approach the area while safety operations continue," the statement read.

The Starship program, central to Musk’s ambitions for deep space exploration and future Mars missions, has faced a series of technical hurdles as it undergoes rigorous testing.
