The Navi Mumbai International Airport, set to open this month, will introduce a system allowing passengers on connecting international flights to complete immigration at the departure airport, easing congestion and positioning Mumbai as a stronger global aviation hub.

The upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) aims to streamline air travel by allowing passengers on connecting international flights to complete immigration formalities at their point of origin, rather than at Mumbai, thus reducing transit hassles.
NMIA is being inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Oct 8 and commercial operations are expected to begin within a month of that date.

The airport is designed to handle an initial capacity of around 20 million passengers annually.
Under the new arrangement, travelers flying from cities such as Ahmedabad, Surat, or Hyderabad and connecting through Mumbai will be able to clear immigration at NMIA itself before boarding their onward international flight. Officials say the setup will mirror global hub models but with emphasis on India’s own carriers.
A similar model is being considered for Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). Passengers connecting internationally from cities like Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Lucknow and Varanasi will be allowed to complete immigration earlier, instead of upon arrival in Delhi.
The Noida International Airport (NIA), set to begin operations later this year, is also slated to adopt this concept, but will initially focus on domestic transfers.
The move is seen as part of a larger push by the government to enhance India’s aviation infrastructure, reduce dependency on foreign hubs, and position Mumbai as a stronger international gateway.
In parallel, airlines are already planning their operations from NMIA. For example, Air India Express has announced intentions to operate around 40 daily domestic arrivals and departures from NMIA to 15 cities.
Other carriers like IndiGo and Akasa have also expressed readiness to commence operations from day one. As Mumbai transitions from being served by a single airport to a dual-airport system, NMIA is expected to become a key hub in the coming decade.
