Second mass shooting this month shocks Gauteng township as victims are gunned down at random and motive remains unclear.

At least nine people were killed and 10 others wounded when gunmen opened fire near an informal tavern in Bekkersdal, a township southwest of Johannesburg, South African police said on December 21, underscoring the country’s deepening crisis of gun violence.
The attack unfolded in the early hours near a site allegedly selling alcohol illegally, with police confirming that several victims were shot at random, including on nearby streets. The motive for the shooting remains unknown.

“Nine people are dead. We don’t have a breakdown of who they are yet,” said Brigadier Brenda Muridili, Gauteng province police spokesperson. Initial reports had put the death toll at 10 before authorities revised the figure downward.
Bekkersdal, located about 25 miles southwest of Johannesburg, is an impoverished area close to some of South Africa’s largest gold mines. Police said the injured were rushed to hospital, while investigations into the attackers and their motive are ongoing.
The incident marks the second mass shooting in South Africa this month, following a December 6 attack in which gunmen stormed a hostel near Pretoria, killing 12 people, including a three-year-old child.
Police confirmed that the latest shooting occurred at a location operating illegally, adding another layer of concern as authorities grapple with violent crime, unregulated alcohol outlets, and persistent insecurity in vulnerable communities.
