Over 2.15 lakh Gram Panchayats connected through fibre network to promote digital inclusion

The Government of India has significantly expanded rural broadband connectivity under the BharatNet initiative. The project has now extended fibre-optic connectivity to more than 2.15 lakh Gram Panchayats, marking a major step toward strengthening digital infrastructure in rural areas.
BharatNet aims to provide high-speed broadband internet to villages across the country, enabling access to various digital services. The initiative supports improved delivery of government services and promotes digital inclusion among rural populations.

Enhanced connectivity will also facilitate services such as digital governance, telemedicine, online education, and e-commerce. By improving internet access, the programme aims to empower rural communities with better opportunities for education, healthcare, and economic development.
Experts note that expanding rural broadband is essential for bridging the digital divide between urban and rural areas. The BharatNet initiative is expected to play a key role in supporting India’s growing digital economy and promoting inclusive development across the country.
