India and ASEAN Strengthen Strategic Cooperation

India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening strategic, economic, and security cooperation amid evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region. The discussions focused on enhancing trade relations, improving defence collaboration, and ensuring regional peace and stability.

The Indo-Pacific region has emerged as a key area of global strategic importance, with growing concerns related to maritime security, supply chain resilience, and geopolitical competition. India and ASEAN countries emphasized the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation, peaceful resolution of disputes, and adherence to international law. Both sides agreed to expand joint naval exercises, defence exchanges, and capacity-building initiatives to strengthen regional security.

Economic cooperation remains a major pillar of India–ASEAN relations. ASEAN is one of India’s largest trading partners, and both sides are working to improve trade connectivity, investment flows, and digital cooperation. Efforts are also being made to strengthen infrastructure connectivity through regional projects and enhance cooperation in emerging sectors such as digital economy, renewable energy, and technology.

This cooperation aligns with India’s Act East Policy, which aims to deepen engagement with Southeast Asian nations and promote regional integration. Stronger India–ASEAN relations contribute to regional stability, economic growth, and strategic balance in the Indo-Pacific.

The partnership is significant for enhancing India’s regional influence, strengthening diplomatic ties, and supporting economic development. It also promotes a rules-based international order and ensures collective security and prosperity in the region.

Overall, closer India–ASEAN cooperation reflects India’s growing role as a key partner in the Indo-Pacific and reinforces its commitment to regional peace, security, and economic progress.
