Government incentives under Semiconductor Mission aim to boost domestic chip production and reduce import dependence

The Government of India has approved major financial incentives to strengthen the country’s semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem and promote domestic chip production. The initiative is being implemented under the India Semiconductor Mission, which seeks to reduce India’s reliance on imported semiconductors and enhance technological self-reliance.
Semiconductors are essential components used in electronic devices such as smartphones, computers, automobiles, and defence systems. Recognizing their strategic importance, the government has introduced incentive schemes to encourage companies to establish semiconductor fabrication units (fabs) and related infrastructure within the country. These incentives include financial support, infrastructure development, and policy assistance to attract global and domestic investors.

The initiative aims to create a robust semiconductor ecosystem by supporting chip design, manufacturing, packaging, and research activities. It also encourages collaboration between industry, academic institutions, and research organizations to promote innovation and skill development in semiconductor technology.
Reducing dependence on semiconductor imports is critical for ensuring supply chain security, especially in light of global chip shortages and geopolitical uncertainties. Domestic manufacturing will enhance India’s capacity to meet growing demand for electronics and strengthen national security by ensuring reliable access to critical technologies.
The development of a strong semiconductor industry will also contribute to economic growth by creating employment opportunities, attracting foreign investment, and supporting India’s expanding electronics manufacturing sector.
Overall, the Semiconductor Mission represents a significant step towards achieving technological sovereignty and advancing the goals of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. It positions India as an emerging global hub for semiconductor manufacturing and strengthens its competitiveness in the technology secto
